Hey everybody!
Happy July! I can't believe how fast this year is flying by. I am SO excited to be featuring another guest feature in today's post.
Today's guest is Abby Asselin. I found out about Abby through her college vlogs! I'm so excited she agreed to be a part of this! Make sure to check out Abby if you haven't already.
Let's get into the Q&A!
Q: Can you give a quick background on yourself?
I’m from Panama City Beach, Florida and I am about to start my senior year at the University of Alabama, where I study Accounting and Finance and work as a Teachers Assistant in the Economics department. I started a Youtube channel my freshman year of college to escape the rough reality I was living in as I struggled adjusting to college. I’ve been watching videos since I was 15 and I felt called to start my channel at my lowest point my freshman year to inspire others to make the most of their every day life, and what started as just an escape from reality grew into a family of almost 80,000 subscribers. It has truly changed my life for the better and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Q: Favorite part of going to University of Alabama?
My favorite part about going to the University of Alabama is that it feels like home and I can truly have whatever college experience I want to have here. I definitely wasn’t able to say this my freshman year, but after 3 years at the school, I know for a fact that anyone can come to this school and have whatever college experience they want and find a group of people that matches that experience.
Q: During the school year, how do you balance your job, YouTube, and social life?
It is SO hard balancing everything during the school year. I have to plan things out and keep my planner and google calendar updated or I definitely will forget a deadline (it’s happened before). I have to prioritize what’s most important, and sometimes it’s hard because I struggle with putting school above Youtube. Since Youtube pays my bills and makes me the happiest, I find myself spending more time than I probably should filming and editing instead of studying. I usually have to sacrifice my social life in order to do it all, meaning I can’t really afford to go out more than once a week, if that.
Q: Do you see yourself being in Texas after post-grad?
I definitely see myself being in Texas! As awesome as it would be to go back home to the beautiful beaches and my family, there simply isn’t much opportunity for young professionals there unless you work in a certain field or have connections. Luckily I landed an internship with a Big 4 accounting firm in Houston for summer 2020, and as long as that goes well, I will hopefully have a job after it or at least have an easier time getting a job in Houston once I graduate!
Q: What was one of your favorite brands to collaborate with?
My favorite brand to collaborate with so far has to be Lululemon. Never in a million years did I think such a cool opportunity would come my way! Although I’ve only worked with them once and it was unpaid, I’d love to work with them again. My favorite consistent collaboration is definitely Fabfitfun, I’m a huge supporter of their brand and service!
Q: Best advice for someone who wants to start a channel
My best advice for people who want to start a channel is to just GO FOR IT. So many people (including myself when I started) just sit around and wait on the right time or opportunity to start or wait around until they aren’t scared anymore. You will always be scared and the right time is now - a lot of people think there will be this magical spark or this moment that happens that marks the time you need to start. If you know for a fact it’s something you want to do, the time is now. Make sure you start your channel for the right reasons, because people can spot an unauthentic Youtuber really quickly. My last piece of advice is to be consistent and be patient. I have never gone a week without uploading since I started my channel and it helps your videos in the Youtube algorithm more if you stay consistent.
Q: Top 3 essentials you always have with you?
My top 3 essentials are a chapstick (probably Mario Badescu lip balm), airpods, and my Hydroflask.
